Barbara Dawson
French Horn
A native of Woodstown, Barbara began playing trumpet in 4th grade under
theinstruction of Larry Marraccini, Woodstown High School Band
Director. She switched to French Horn in 6th grade. She
continued playing French Horn in concert band through high school while
playing other brass instruments during football season. In high
school, Barbara played French Horn in the All South Jersey Band and the
Salem American Legion Band. She also played recorder with various
ensembles around Salem County.
Barbara received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from
Muhlenberg College where she played with the Muhlenberg College band under
the direction of Ronald Demke (conductor of the Allentown Band).
Following graduation from college, Barbara stopped playing French Horn but
continued to play recorder in small ensembles. She also directed the
Junior Choir at Woodstown Presbyterian Church for several years.
After a 22 year hiatus, Barbara began playing French Horn again with the
Salem American Legion Band in 2001 under the direction of Patricia
Bullock. She has also played with the Sharptown Brass and joined the
Salem County Brass Society in August 2005.
Barbara is married to Ronald Dorrell and lives in
Alloway. She has one daughter who occasionally plays bass
clarinet with the Salem American Legion Band.
